Layering for Petite and Tall Frames
The three-layer formula works for every frame — but proportion is what makes it look intentional rather than accidental, and proportion changes depending on your height.
If you're petite
Bulk is the enemy of proportion on a smaller frame. Keep your base and mid layers slim, and let a single statement piece — usually the outer layer — carry the volume. A cropped or knee-length coat tends to work better than a long one, which can shorten the leg line. Vertical details (a button-down worn open over a fitted tee) help elongate rather than divide the frame into blocks.
If you're tall
Taller frames can carry more layers and more volume without it reading as bulky — this is where a longer trench or an oversized cardigan actually works in your favor rather than against it. The risk instead is a top-heavy silhouette: balance a roomy mid layer with something slimmer on the bottom half, or a longer outer layer with a shorter mid layer underneath it.
The rule that works for everyone
Whatever your height, the safest anchor point is the waist — even a loosely belted trench or an open cardigan tucked at one point gives the eye a place to land, which keeps three stacked layers from reading as one shapeless block.
